Options

Septic tank and leach field

This is the most common replacement. A septic tank settles solids, and a leach field or bed lets the soil treat the liquid. Whether it fits depends on soil, groundwater depth, lot size and setbacks.

Aerobic treatment unit (ATU)

An ATU adds oxygen to treat wastewater to a higher level. It's often used where lots are small, soils are poor, or you're close to water. It needs power and regular maintenance.

Sewer connection

If a city sewer line runs near your property, connecting can be the simplest long-term fix. Ask your contractor whether sewer is available on your street.

Process

  1. Site visit and soil or percolation evaluation
  2. Engineered design and Department of Health wastewater permit
  3. Installation by a licensed contractor
  4. Closing the old cesspool, then final inspection

The Department of Health's Wastewater Branch oversees and permits all individual wastewater systems in Hawaiʻi.
